Darkroom Course

Mondays 6:30pm - 8:30pm; Sept. 29, end Dec. 1., 2008
Teacher: Frank Abruzzese
Age: over 18 years
Maximum of 12 Students
Suitable for beginners and intermediate photographers

This ten week course is designed for students who wish to learn basic photographic processes including how to use a manual film camera and printing in the darkroom, creating a foundation for both traditional and digital photography. Students will learn the practical application of aperture and shutter speed in creating properly exposed negatives, as well as the expressive use of composition, selective focus and lens selection while shooting. Everyone will hand process their own film and learn to print in the darkroom by controlling contrast and exposure, producing a traditional black and white print. This course is suitable for students new to photography, or to those who wish to gain more experience printing in the darkroom.

Once a week we will meet in the studio for workshops on camera functions, film processing, group critiques and lectures on various contemporary and historically significant photographers. Students are expected to spend a minimum of four additional hours per week printing in the darkroom at the Cow House. Each student will need their own 35mm film camera with manual controls (an automatic camera with manual overrides will work fine). Students may purchase film and paper directly from the studios, or alternatively provide their own. All processing chemicals are included in the course fee.

Price: 350 euro for 10 weeks
